Hydraulic cylinders are used to convert mechanical energy into linear motion, or vice versa. Hydraulic cylinders are closed on both ends, with a piston rod extending from one end. The cylinder head is on the opposite side of the cylinder barrel. The piston rod slides within the cylinder barrel and connects to the piston. The sliding rings on the piston move along grooves in the cylinder wall, while seals prevent any leaking of hydraulic fluid around the piston. A hydraulic diaphragm separates high-pressure fluid in the cylinder from low pressure fluid at ambient pressure in its surroundings. A pressure regulator maintains a constant pressure within the cylinder even when it is open to atmospheric pressure.
