A combination starter is a type of electrical starter that combines the functions of both a contactor and an overload relay into a single unit. It is used to control the starting and stopping of an electric motor by providing a means to switch the power to the motor on and off, as well as to protect the motor from damage due to overloading.

 

The contactor portion of the starter uses electrical contacts to switch the power to the motor on and off, while the overload relay monitors the current flowing through the motor and will trip to disconnect the power if the current exceeds a certain level.
